Birmingham multidisciplinary firm adi Group brought together 58 apprentices from across all levels and departments for its annual Apprentice Awayday.

The two-day development experience is designed to build skills and connections across the engineering business, from 1st year apprentices to those multiple years into their courses

Hosted at Alton Towers, the programme mixed hands-on learning with team challenges and peer networking in a setting designed to push people out of their comfort zones.

Across the two days, apprentices took part in structured workshops culminating in each team developing a proposal and presenting it back for feedback, giving participants practical experience in problem-solving and public speaking.

Attendees also set personal 90-day SMART goals, either work-related or focused on personal growth, so that learning from the event translates into measurable progress back on site.

Just as importantly, the Awayday gave colleagues from different divisions and locations the chance to meet face-to-face, share experiences and understand how their roles connect across the wider business.

Paul Smith, CEO at adi Group, said: “Providing young people with real, hands-on experiences is one of the most powerful ways to grow future engineering talent. Days like this take learning beyond the classroom and show apprentices how collaboration and problem-solving come together in the real world.

“We’re so proud to invest in local young people because our industry, and our communities, need their skills and ambition nourished. By setting clear 90-day goals and giving them the space to test ideas, we help turn potential into progress. It’s why we at adi continue to back programmes like the Apprentice Awayday year after year.”

The event underscored the importance of early-career development and to creating pathways into engineering for young people in Birmingham.
